1. What's CARBON?

• "TOYO TANSO"'s "TANSO" means "CARBON". Do you know what the CARBON is?

  In a periodic table, carbon is "C" as chemical symbol and "6" as atomic number. It has 4 arms to bond with other elements and has special characteristics to make various types of crystal.

  Diamond, for instance, is a crystal with regular tetrahedron structure. Since atoms are bonded steadily each other, the diamond is the hardest material among natural materials.

  Graphite has the layer structure with six-sided network crystal. As it is easy to peel, graphite is used for pencil tips. Graphite also has superior electrical conductivity.

  

  There is a carbon called Fullerene (C60) which has a rare crystal structure like a soccer ball. This Fullerene (C60) comes to attention as one of the most-advanced and highly functional material.

  Of course, there are some carbons without regular crystal structure such as soot and coke.
