Carbon packings for machinery are mainly used for dynamic seals, and since they are self-lubricating and do not require lubricants such as oil or grease, they are used as packing materials for oilless equipment and in liquids where lubricants cannot be used. The main applications of carbon packing are in the sealing section of oilless reciprocating compressors (reciprocating compressors) and as a shaft-seal sealing member of water wheel for hydraulic power generation, and carbon rings are used as a sealing member for screw-type compressors.
